San Pedro’s Saga Humane Society Receives and Gives Back

On September 19, 2012, Clara lee Arnold (Hopkins Belize Humane Society) and Alexandra Rothlisberger (Humane Society International) arrived in San Pedro for the first time to check out SAGA’s clinic and Forth Dog holding facility. It is through these people that the San Pedro Saga Humane Society achieves such great milestones in their development and assistance to the community.

Clara Lee and Alexandra also attended the second annual Street Party cook-off that celebrated Central American cuisine. Saga’s cook-off have proven very successful and a great way to raise funds for the organization. Everybody had fun meeting Saga supporters and the duo made many friends.

At the cook-off, Ambergris Today got a glimpse of Saga’s new golf cart which was donated by the Beck family of the United States. Heather Beck just recently visited San Pedro and made sure Saga received the golf cart; she has been a very instrumental volunteer and assistant to Saga.

Alexandra Rothlisberger, of Humane Society International, has also been very helpful in assisting Saga with special international grants which Saga uses to attend conferences and training programs in the U.S. so as to improve their services to the community.

Also this past weeks, four Humane Societies (Hopkins Belize Humane Society, Placencia Humane Society, SAGA Humane Society and Humane Society International) joined forces in providing free clinics held down in southern Belize (including Hopkins, Placencia, Seine Bight and Dangriga). Saga’s veterinarian Dr. Orlando Baptist volunteered two days of his services to the free clinics; he worked alongside Dr. Tina Cone, a returning U.S. veterinarian who has been coming to Belize many times.

Upon invitation from Hopkins Belize Humane Society, Katia Marin (Board Director) and Heather Beck (Volunteer) from Saga travelled south to volunteer, collaborate ideas and resources.

“We are hoping that all humane societies in the country join forces to help all the needy animals in Belize,” commented Katia Marin to Ambergris Today. “Together we will move forward.”

Through this medium, Saga would like to thank Clara Lee Arnold for all the hard work she does in bringing vet volunteer teams throughout the year to do free clinics which cater to low income families. Clara Lee Arnold represented Belize at the 2011Animal Welfare conference held in San Juan, Puerto Rico; there she talked about attracting volunteer vet teams to Belize. Saga also thanks Alex Rothlisberger (HSI) for visiting Saga and helping out in the vet clinics.
